Volunteer dinner at the farm

Writer: Dan BaumanDan Bauman

Because their zipcode was different than Spencerport, I always considered Homesteads for Hope a Greece business. Oddly enough, I just recently found out that they’re in Gates even though their website says that they’re located in the Town of Ogden. Who knows?

Homesteads for Hope is a non-profit organization that has a 55 acre community farm for people with disabilities. At the farm, there's an event space and a farm store. The farm store has fresh produce, gifts like soap and shirts and they showcase artisans too. They also have a café that has drinks and food, with a limited selection of salads and sandwiches.

The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum held their volunteer appreciation dinner at the farm on September 21st. I volunteered this summer at the museum, so I attended the dinner. The main food was provided by Barton’s Parkside Hots, but there was also macaroni salad and potato salad and desserts. There were three full tables of volunteers that ate in a beautiful large room. I could see how this would be a nice location for a wedding.

At this event, we were updated on the statistics for the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum. This season, there were over a thousand visitors that came to the museum. The number of volunteer hours was around four hundred and this count is for June to September. I volunteered every Thursday this summer and it was enjoyable being a greeter and welcoming boaters, locals, and visitors from out of state. The museum is always looking for volunteers. Call 352-0942 if you are interested in volunteering next year.
